happy new year
i think the concept of new years is kinda funny. i mean, new year’s day is just another day on the calendar. well, so is any other holiday, but hear me out. new year’s isn’t based on someone’s birthday or on someone supposedly “discovering” something or on some pagans gallavanting around tricking and treating. the only thing going for new year’s is that it is the first day of the calendar.
i’m not dissing on new year’s or anything. i love it. any excuse to get out of school or work is totally fine by me. i love the celebration. i love the way people have fun with complete strangers and if they’re at any kind of huge group event like times square or the peach drop they’re celebrating with no personal space with thousands of people. i love that it feels like a time to “start over” although technically, time is still going on. it doesn’t know that it’s restarting or that people think that for a brief moment, time has ended and started up again at the same time. we could start over at any part of the year, but at new year’s, it just feels more official.
i remember when me and my sister were younger, we’d play a game where we would start time over by saying, “start over started.” i don’t even know why we were starting over. i think whenever we’d get in a fight or something, we’d start time over so we could continue on with a clean slate. awwww, cute right? well, it didn’t really work that much, cause i think we’d hit each other and then immediately say, “start over started!!” it was a good concept, but it just didn’t pan out too well.
anyways, i love new year’s – a time for celebrating and getting smashed while your best friend has to carry you over their shoulder and hold your hair while you throw up in the toilet wishing you didn’t sing a rousing rendition of some bad 80’s song with thousands of people watching you on the jumbo-tron. just kidding. i love new year’s because it’s a time to start over, a time to celebrate with friends.
why do you like new year’s (if you do)?
