is laughter the best medicine?

i have a confession to make.  i hope i don’t make anyone upset by this.  i just realized that i did this recently.  here goes.  i realized that i give pity laughs very frequently.  there, i said it. i think it’s become so natural and second nature to me, i don’t even realize that i’m doing it.  it just kinda hit me one day.  i always realized that people don’t always laugh at stuff that i say, and i always knew that i would laugh at jokes other people say.  but i never put two and two together that sometimes people don’t laugh at jokes people say.

it’s definitely the sympathy in me that wants to laugh at other people’s jokes.  i mean, i’m sure you know how embarrassed you feel when you think you said something pretty darn funny and no one is laughing.  i mean, i’ll at least give a smile if i was listening.  even if i wasn’t listening, i’ll attempt to make a smile like i kind of thought it was funny.  but i’m amazed at how many people just don’t respond.  it’s like no one said anything even though you know everyone heard it.

i know it’s wrong to laugh at something that’s not funny.  no one should have to give pity laughs.  so lately, i’ve been trying not to laugh when i hear something i don’t think is funny.  it’s really hard though.  cause i just want to give them some feedback cause they’re trying to be funny.  but i guess not laughing is feedback too.  tough love buddy.  you’re gonna have to work harder at telling funnier, wittier, better timed jokes.  and i’m just not gonna laugh until you do.

on the other hand.  i do laugh at some of the stupidest things.  not only am i the only laughing when someone is trying to be funny but isn’t, but i’m also the only one laughing when i shouldn’t be.  i need to take a class or something.  a laughing class.  i think that’d be such a great idea.  i like to analyze humor.  what people like to laugh at, what sets different types of people off, etc.  here’s a short list of what i’ve got so far:

accents – it seems if someone has an accent, their humor meter automatically gets a boost.  i mean, they don’t even have to be that funny.  don’t you know those people who are foreigners and they say something that’s not really meant to be funny, but you can’t help but laugh?  to them, they’re not trying to be funny, but the accent makes it funny.  is this mean?  if so, i’m a huge jerk.

quotes – timing is everything.  so is frequency.  too many quotes at one time is too much.  not very funny when you can quote a whole movie or tv show in one sitting.  a line here and there from a popular movie will suffice.

accidents – i’m not talking about car crashes or anything, but the run-of-the-mill america’s funniest home video stuff.  i don’t care how lame people say it is, if america’s funniest home videos is on tv, people will watch and people will “ooooooohhh!!!” and “aaaaaaahhhh!!!!” with every hit to the crotch with a baseball.  even funnier when it happens to your friends.

not funny

too much cursing – i admit that sometimes curse words actually do make things funnier.  there’s a spot that only curse words can hit that is left empty and void when a curse word is not used.  but too much cursing just turns into vulgarity.  i mean, c’mon buddy, do you kiss your mom with that mouth?  you’re making baby Jesus cry.

obnoxiousness – i never understood this.  the whole viva la bam and the tom green show kind of pranks that people pull.  it’s just not funny.  it’s really annoying actually.  these kinds of people need some love or something.  leave your parents alone.  leave strangers on the street trying to buy a hotdog alone.  or if you’re going to bother them, do something that they would enjoy and think was funny also.  don’t just slap them or throw mustard on their shirt.

that’s all i got for now.  maybe i’ll add to the list later.  i’ll also take any suggestions of what you guys think is funny vs. not funny.

  1. i’m a strict adherent of punology. it is the culmination of all things that we find funny – human fallacy, chance, and even wonder. unfortunately, most people seem to find it not funny or worse, they claim it is a lazy attempt at humor. the more people hear my puns, the more they revile them. but i will not change my stance. for puns are a reflection on our very own frail language. it is an inflection on ourselves and what we could be.

i do agree with you on too much cursing. i must kill those birds and not use *fowl* language. wow that was horrible.

  4. Funny – basically any joke that is told by a person who does not have a reputation for being funny. The less humorous their reputation, the funnier their jokes get.

Not funny – Crude, sexually themed humor.

  6. […] put up with it, and i’ll listen to it, but i really wish people didn’t curse.  earlier, i noted that sometimes cursing makes something funnier than it would be without it.  and i stick […]
