olympics edition

it’s so weird, but i’m not a huge fan of the olympics.  i used to be, but i guess as i get older the magic is kinda lost.  i’m not really excited about the olympics.  i used to sit at home and watch every event i could.  now i just want to watch men’s basketball and tennis.  does that make me unpatriotic or just not a big sports fan?  maybe my love of international sports and politics will be rekindled by these olympics.

there’s a bunch of current events surrounding the beijing olympics if you haven’t kept up.  i usually don’t, but seeing as i’ve been trying to keep up with current events, there are some pretty interesting stories going on.  here are a couple that i know of:

Georgia and Russia in conflict – 1500 people have died in south ossetia when it wanted to separate from north ossetia.  i’m not good with the details, but i think georgia sent tanks in order to keep the territory, and russia sent forces to stop them.

N. Korea and S. Korea to march as 2 separate olympic countries – the past 2 olympics, the two koreas marched together as one country under a unified flag, but this year negotiation talks didn’t go so well.  s. korea sees this as a setback in peacemaking attempts.

the olympic stadium is one to be remembered – nicknamed the “birdsnest”, it is to go down in history as one of the most memorably designed stadiums since the 50s i think.  they made the walls semi-transparent to show the team colors of countries playing inside and the lines that go all around the stadium represent china’s strength as in muscles sinews.  they hired some european guy to design it.

china cuts pollution leading up to the olympics – the government limited car use and shut down the industrial sector in order to clean the air in preparation for the olympics.

chinese food renamed – some of the traditional foods served in china had to be renamed because traditionally they are named for what they look like and not what’s inside.  apparently they had one called man and woman making a baby or something like that.  pretty gross.

on a lighter note:

vietnam awesome in mathematics – if you watched vietnam enter into the stadium, the comments the commentator made was pretty funny.  he was saying that the vietnamese won about 150 medals in the mathematics olympiad, but haven’t been as successful in the olympics winning… 1 medal.

chinese love lights and they love fireworks – i’m not trying to be racist or anything, but man, those fireworks and light shows were amazing.  and i’m not even a big fan of fireworks.  man, they really know how to put on a show.

  1. In other news

Koreans ruined the surprise of the opening ceremony – SBS was banned from using their cameras during the ceremony. They’re lucky they get to tape at all!

  2. the fireworks were computer generated!

also, you should tune into swimming. yesterday’s 4×100 freestyle relay was pretty awesome as the U.S. inched ahead to beat the French who were quoted saying, “The Americans? We’re going to crush them!”
