accents

with 6 comments

i love accents.  i think my favorite is australian.  i think depending on the accent, it kind of bumps you up a notch or two on the desirability scale.  for example: british accent – plus 2 points, korean accent – minus 1 point.  you see what i mean?

sometimes i wonder if there are any countries out there that think that american accents are hot.  if so, i’d like to go there.  hahaha.  it’s funny how something so normal for us can be so attractive to someone else and vice versa. i think that’s a cool concept.  “you mean all i have to do is just say some words and you’re attracted to me?”  that’s pretty cool.  although i’m sure you’d get in trouble cause it’s all superficial attraction.  a hawt accent with a great personality would be game over for me.  why is austalia so far away?

i realized that girls, on average, are usually better at impersonating accents.  i can do my share, but man, i know some girls that if i met them for the first time and they were doing their accent, i’d think they were foreign for sure.  and i’m talking korean girls doing a scottish accent.  it’s that good.

a guy i used to work with at starbucks would randomly start talking to customers in a british accent.  his was pretty good.  although he did it so much we started to wonder about him.  plus it got kind of annoying.  i tried doing it, but when they asked me to repeat something i’d clear my throat and go back to my normal speaking voice.

what kind of accents are “game-over” for you?

  5. i took some linguistics classes in college that opened my mind. i’m sure you’ve heard of this from me before…

there is a difference between “accents” and “dialects.” if you’re talking about varieties of English, it’s correct to say that British English or Australian English is a dialect. The African-American Vernacular English and the Southern “accent” are dialects as well. but you were right in saying Korean “accent” because an accent is the way that you pronounce or enunciate syllables of words in another language. i have an accent of my own as well, in the way that i say certain words.

according to linguists, there is no such thing as “standard” English. what we call mainstream American English is the upper-middle class Midwestern dialect.

i like pretty much all dialects. i love hawaiian pidgin (you know, from the movie 50 first dates).

there’s a reason why girls are better at imitating accents/dialects. females are marginalized (i love this word)in society and males are more bound to the rules of society, including rules of language and speaking. and language is part of one’s identity, which is why society tends to judge someone based on the way of speaking. in the same way, gender influences how one is able to explore realms of other identities. same goes for sexuality, too…

sorry i got all analytical. i need to go back to school.
