rise and shine

rise-and-shineso me and my girlfriend were talking about how people wake up and i  thought i’d turn it into a blog entry.  you see, one of my roommates was taking a nap.  so i yelled out his name, not knowing that he was asleep only to get no answer.  so i decide to knock on his door cause maybe he just didn’t hear me or was in his bathroom or something.  but as i walk in, i see him sleeping.  i quietly leave his room and close the door.  after that, my girlfriend proceeded to tell me about one of her friends that she would never ever wake up again just because she gave her “the look” when she woke up.  so that’s how we got on the topic of how people wake up, especially when someone wakes them.  so here goes:

the get-up-and-go riser – i think this is what i am although sometimes i pretend to be the deep sleeper.  when someone wakes me up, i get up pretty easily and i’m ready to start my day or go to dinner or catch a movie or whatever.  when someone says, “enoch, wake up” i say ok and i’m up brushing my teeth.  it doesn’t matter how early it is, i’ll just get up.  if i’m really tired, i’ll kinda lay there for a little bit before saying ok and getting up to brush my teeth.  however, this doesn’t work if i know someone’s already in the bathroom cause i’ll just lay there until the bathroom’s free and then get up.

the make-you-feel-bad riser – this person makes you feel horrible for waking them up.  you could be waking them up to share with them that they’ve just won a million dollars, it doesn’t matter, they’ll still make you feel like the biggest jerk in the world for waking them up.  i feel bad for waking one of my roommates up because i know that he doesn’t get too much time to rest, so if i wake him up, i feel bad because i know that if i have to wake him up, then he must’ve been pretty tired.  on the flip side, there are those people that just give you the stank look when you wake them up that just makes you want to crawl under a rock and die.

the comedic riser – my other roommate is this one.  these are the people you just love to wake up because you can just mess with them and it’s just funny to watch them attempt to wake up.  sometimes you can have conversations with them and they’ll have no idea that they’re talking to you.  these are the people you can prank to wake up: hand in warm water, shaving cream on the face, screaming bloody murder or other loud noises, drawing on their face, hiding their glasses/phone, removing their blankets/pillow/sleeping bag/mattress one by one, throwing things at them while they sleep, sticking things to their face (like biting off gummy bears and sticking the gooey part to their face), sticking things in their clothes (we once put a 20 oz coke bottle inside one of my friends shirt and stood it up so he looked like he had a dinosaur spike on his back), etc.

the deep sleeper – they can sometimes cross-over into the comedic riser group.  this person, there is just no way to wake them up.  loud noises, physical nudging, or pranks do not work on waking this person up.  after trying for half an hour or so, everyone just kinda gives up on waking them up.  and then a couple hours later, they’ll wake up and cause you to be late to stuff cause you were waiting for them to get up so that you could go somewhere or do something.  this person does not know the joy of a chick-fil-a chicken biscuit or breakfast foods altogether.  they think the day starts with lunch and believe the day was meant to only have 2 meals and have never seen a sunrise.

what kind of riser are you?

  1. though i’ve been all those at one point, i’d say i’m a deep sleeper by nature but am a 90% get-up-and-go riser if somebody wakes me up.
