resealable bags

with 5 comments

sockshave you ever noticed that some socks (i.e. 6 packs of hanes, fruit of the loom, jerzees) come in a resealable bag?  why is that?  do they expect you to re-use the bag for sock storage purposes?  does anyone do that?  is there some other use for sock packaging that i don’t know of that is widely used?  the funny thing is, because they advertise that the package is resealable, it makes me want to buy it more.

so me and some friends were having a conversation about this yesterday.  why does it come in resealable bags?  the conclusion we (they) came up with: camping.  yup, camping.  i don’t believe it myself.  i think there has to be a better explanation than camping.  they say that there’s apparently a myriad of people who, on their way to go camping, need to stop by wal-mart or target to pick up socks because they forgot to pack them or whatever reason they need socks.  so the resealable bags comes in handy to keep the socks dry or whatever else you may need to keep dry on a camping trip: tinder?  smore ingredients?  i dunno.

so this got us talking about resealable packages in general and why more things don’t come in resealable packages and how things that should come in resealable packages don’t (i.e. chips, some cookies – i do like the effort that oreos have made, fruits and vegetables, etc.) and how things that shouldn’t come in resealable packages do (i.e. socks).  we then concluded that zip lock bags, the epitome of resealable bags, should come in a bigger resealable bag instead of the cardboard box it comes in.  that way you get one bigger sized bag free and it cuts down on packaging material.  smart eh?

so what do you think?  first off, why do socks come in resealable packages and secondly, what else should be in resealable packages?

  3. I found this answer on yahoo…somebody’s reason why they put it on resealable bags:
“well, because in stores like K-Mart, and Wal-Mart some people rip open the bags to see if they are the right size, and if not leavethe bag all ripped up and the socks hanging out. The store then has to put the d@mn socks on clearance because there is a missing pair and they lose money! So now companies are getting smart and putting the socks in zip lock bags for the inconsiderate idiots!”

  5. they won’t ever sell bread in re-sealable packaging; it would last longer and you’d buy less bread.
