analysis of humor

humorsleep and humor are two things i loooove to analyze.  i just think the subjects are really intriguing.  what makes us laugh?  and what goes on in our subconscious while we sleep?  fascinating.  just fascinating.

anyways, i was thinking – how do different levels of humor affect our perception of humor?  if you have a more acute or developed sense of humor, does that mean you don’t find “lower” levels of humor funny?  for instance, i know this guy.  let’s call him ranthony ree.  he’s a very funny guy.  a lot of people would say that.  his sense of humor is unmatched, i would say.  and in a lot of ways, i would say it is on a higher level than other people.  the thing is, he himself doesn’t really find that many things “laugh-worthy”.  i would hypothesize that this is because the humor has to be on his level in order for him to laugh at it.  i’ve noticed that he would laugh sometimes when something does hit him just right, something on his level.

so does that mean that people at a higher level of humor are just doomed to only dish it out and never be able to laugh as much as the “average” person?  not to say that i’m at a high level or anything, but i find myself finding a lot of things not funny while people around me are thinking it’s the funniest thing in the world.  however, when i make a joke, people laugh as well.  hmmm… interesting

what are your thoughts on different “levels” of humor?

  1. maybe you’re not really that funny. maybe everyone around you just has a lower level of humor. haha. 🙂

i’m going to have to put myself in the same boat as ranthony. i would like to laugh at more things, but i just don’t think it’s that funny.

most shows comedy shows on tv, i don’t laugh. the only shows i like are 30 rock and arrested development. but even then, i don’t necessarily laugh aloud.

  2. i would agree that there are levels of humor, but only after one considers the person’s brand/type(s) of humor that he/she likes to employ and other people’s perceptions or appreciation of that/those type(s) of humor

  3. Humor is very much like Beauty. It seems to be subjective to a degree, but in the polar ends seem objective.

Humor also seems like a type of Beauty that makes you laugh instead of cry.

  4. subjectiveness. R can laugh at G’s humor. P can laugh at G’s humor. but when M came along and tried to make people laugh, R could be laughing while P doesn’t find it funny.
it also has to do with preference of humor and getting used to certain types of humor which one wasn’t used to.
